3.- Grafitoak nazio arteko komunitate zientifikoaren esku jartzea, arlo bakoitzeko aditu onenek azter ditzaten, arkeometriakoek barne, eta azterketa horien emaitzak zientzia aldizkarietan argitaratzea.<\/p>\n

4.- Arkeologo talde independente batek kontraste indusketak egitea, 2005ean eta 2006an agerturiko grafitoen antzekorik berriz agertzen den ikusteko.<\/p>\n

Se ofrecer\u00e1 la firma de la carta a personalidades de la Arqueolog\u00eda, Historia, Ling\u00fc\u00edstica, y de la Cultura en general. Su primer firmante es Edward Harris, director del Museo de las Bahamas. Las firmas recogidas ser\u00e1n presentadas hacia finales de a\u00f1o.<\/em><\/p>\n

Estimados Sr. y Sra.<\/p>\n

Como Uds. probablemente sabr\u00e1n, en 2005 y 2006, el equipo dirigido por el arque\u00f3logo Eliseo Gil hall\u00f3 en el yacimiento de la antigua ciudad romana de Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, en el municipio alav\u00e9s de Iru\u00f1a-Oka, m\u00e1s de 400 piezas inscritas con textos en lenguas latina y vasca, s\u00edmbolos y motivos iconogr\u00e1ficos cristianos y escenas de la vida cotidiana, que fueron datadas mediante estratigraf\u00eda en los siglos II a V d.C. Con el fin de estudiar estas piezas, la Diputaci\u00f3n Foral de \u00c1lava (DFA) constituy\u00f3 un grupo de expertos, denominado Comisi\u00f3n Cient\u00edfica Asesora. El 19 de noviembre de 2008, los hallazgos fueron declarados falsos en base a la opini\u00f3n de algunos miembros de la Comisi\u00f3n, decret\u00e1ndose la expulsi\u00f3n del equipo arqueol\u00f3gico del yacimiento.<\/p>\n

Nosotros, sin embargo, queremos hacer constar que dicha opini\u00f3n no fue compartida un\u00e1nimemente por todos los miembros de la Comisi\u00f3n o sus asesores externos, y manifestar que la misma carece de una base cient\u00edfica s\u00f3lida. En este sentido, autores procedentes de diferentes disciplinas, entre ellos algunos de los abajo firmantes, han hecho p\u00fablicos diversos informes y art\u00edculos expresando su discrepancia con la supuesta falsedad de los grafitos y aportando argumentos a favor de su autenticidad.<\/p>\n

Aunque la DFA ha considerado probada la falsedad de los hallazgos de Iru\u00f1a-Veleia y en base a tal suposici\u00f3n en la primavera de 2009 present\u00f3 querellas contra Eliseo Gil, como presunto autor del supuesto fraude, y contra Oscar Escribano y Rub\u00e9n Cerd\u00e1n por otros supuestos delitos, nosotros, en cambio, consideramos que la autenticidad de dichos hallazgos es actualmente objeto de una controversia cient\u00edfica que debe resolverse en el \u00e1mbito cient\u00edfico y no en el judicial. Por ello, con el fin de facilitar el estudio cient\u00edfico de los mencionados hallazgos, proponemos las siguientes actuaciones:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Rectificaci\u00f3n de la orden foral del 19\/11\/2008 que declaraba la falsedad de los hallazgos de Iru\u00f1a-Veleia.<\/li>\n
  2. Retirada de la querella judicial interpuesta contra las personas arriba mencionadas.<\/li>\n
  3. Puesta a disposici\u00f3n de la comunidad cient\u00edfica internacional de las piezas arqueol\u00f3gicas, que permita su estudio por los mejores expertos en las disciplinas implicadas en los hallazgos, incluida la arqueometr\u00eda, y la publicaci\u00f3n de estos estudios en revistas cient\u00edficas.<\/li>\n
  4. Realizaci\u00f3n de excavaciones de contraste por un equipo arqueol\u00f3gico independiente, para determinar si se reproducen hallazgos similares a los de los a\u00f1os 2005 y 2006.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Creemos que los hallazgos de Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, en caso de ser aut\u00e9nticos, y no tenemos ninguna evidencia que demuestre lo contrario, pueden tener un gran inter\u00e9s cient\u00edfico, hist\u00f3rico y cultural, que transciende mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del \u00e1mbito de \u00c1lava o del Pa\u00eds Vasco. Por ello, instamos a las autoridades de \u00c1lava a tomar todas las medidas oportunas para que dichos hallazgos sean preservados como potencial legado de la humanidad y a dar todas las facilidades para que los mismos puedan ser objeto de estudios cient\u00edficos detallados y rigurosos por expertos en las disciplinas relevantes.<\/p>\n

    Dears Mr. and Ms.<\/p>\n

    As you probably know, in 2005 and 2006, the team led by the archaeologist Eliseo Gil discovered more than 400 pieces at the excavation site of the ancient Roman city of Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, near the city of Iru\u00f1a, Alava, which were inscribed with texts in Latin and Basque, Christian symbols and iconographic motifs, and scenes of daily life, which through stratigraphy were dated to the 2nd<\/sup> to 5th<\/sup> centuries AD. In order to study these findings, the Government of the Province of Alava (Diputaci\u00f3n Foral de \u00c1lava, DFA) convened a group of experts, known as the Scientific Advisory Committee on Iru\u00f1a-Veleia. On November 19, 2008, the DFA, drawing on an opinion expressed by some members of this committee, declared that the artefacts were forgeries and ordered the removal of the team of archaeologists from the Iru\u00f1a-Veleia site.<\/p>\n

    However, we should point out that this opinion was not shared unanimously by all members of the Committee or its external advisors and that it lacks a solid scientific foundation. In this regard, academics from various disciplines, including some of the signatories of this letter, have made public a significant number of reports and articles expressing their disagreement with the presumed falsehood of the Iru\u00f1a-Veleia artefacts and presenting arguments in favor of their authenticity.<\/p>\n

    While the DFA assumed that the falsehood of the inscriptions of Iru\u00f1a-Veleia had been proven, and, based on that supposition, filed suit in the spring of 2009 against Eliseo Gil as the presumed author of the supposed forgery, and against \u00d3scar Escribano and Rub\u00e9n Cerd\u00e1n for other supposed wrongdoings, we are of the opinion that the artefacts are currently at the center of a scientific controversy, one that should be resolved in the scientific arena and not in a court of law. Therefore, in order to facilitate the scientific study of the pieces discovered at Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, we propose taking the following actions:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Rescinding the Alava Government\u2019s order of 19 November 2008 that declared the discoveries of Iru\u00f1a-Veleia to be forgeries.<\/li>\n
    2. Withdrawing the law suits filed against the above-mentioned individuals.<\/li>\n
    3. Making the pieces found at Iru\u00f1a-Veleia available to the international scientific community, in order to allow for their study by the best qualified experts in disciplines relevant to the findings, including archaeometry, and the publication of these studies in scientific journals.<\/li>\n
    4. Having an independent team of archaeologists carry out controlled excavations at Iru\u00f1a-Veleia in order to determine whether findings similar to those of 2005 and 2006 are produced.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      We believe that the artefacts discovered at the excavation site of Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, if proven to be authentic, and we have no evidence to the contrary, will have important scientific, historical and cultural implications, which go far beyond the territory of Alava or the Basque Country. For this reason, we call upon the authorities of Alava to take all appropriate measures necessary in order to preserve these findings as a potential legacy of humanity and to provide all the means necessary so that they can be subjected to detailed and rigorous scientific study by experts in the relevant disciplines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
