Edward Harris<\/strong>, Bermudaseko Museoko zuzendaria, munduan gehien erabiltzen den arkeologia metodoaren sortzailea da. Oso ondo ezagutzen du Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, aztarnategia bisitatu baitzuen Iru\u00f1a-Veleiako 1. Aunque no pretendo entender todas las cuestiones relacionadas con los grafitos de Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, seg\u00fan he podido comprobar, este asunto no ha podido ser peor gestionado por las autoridades. Dichas actuaciones, tan nefastas, han dado como resultado la difamaci\u00f3n y la calumnia hacia varios arque\u00f3logos excavadores muy profesionales.<\/p>\n

Uno no necesita ser arque\u00f3logo para aceptar que estos objetos arqueol\u00f3gicos son aut\u00e9nticos, ya que los argumentos para declararlos falsos desaf\u00edan toda l\u00f3gica y entendimiento de las circunstancias en las que los falsificadores normales act\u00faan, por no hablar de la total ausencia de beneficio econ\u00f3mico o de otra \u00edndole que supuestamente deber\u00eda reportar a los arque\u00f3logos que presuntamente crearon estas 400 \u00abpiezas maestras\u00bb de grafitos antiguos.<\/p>\n

El asunto es una absoluta desgracia para la profesi\u00f3n de la arqueolog\u00eda en el Pa\u00eds Vasco, en Espa\u00f1a, y, ciertamente, en Europa. Debe encontrarse la manera de rehabilitar a Eliseo Gil Zubillaga, Idoia Filloy y cualesquiera otros arque\u00f3logos que hayan sido manchados con la repugnante acusaci\u00f3n de ser unos falsificadores, no habiendo ninguna raz\u00f3n o motivaci\u00f3n concebible para que ellos llevaran a cabo un fraude tan masivo hacia la comunidad arqueol\u00f3gica y ciertamente hacia el mundo en general.<\/p>\n

La difamaci\u00f3n de esas personas no tiene precedentes en la arqueolog\u00eda, y uno se aventurar\u00eda a afirmar que nunca ha llegado a tal nivel hacia ning\u00fan arque\u00f3logo excavador vivo o en la memoria registrada\"\"<\/a>, especialmente en el periodo moderno, comenzando en la d\u00e9cada de 1960, cuando el m\u00e9todo estratigr\u00e1fico sali\u00f3 a la luz como el m\u00e9todo cient\u00edfico esencial para las excavaciones arqueol\u00f3gicas, un proceso que se aceler\u00f3 hacia el final de la d\u00e9cada de 1970 con la publicaci\u00f3n de \u201cPrincipios de Estratigraf\u00eda Arqueol\u00f3gica\u201d en 1979, m\u00e9todos a los que se adhirieron Gil y Filloy en su trabajo.<\/p>\n

El hecho cient\u00edfico es que la estratificaci\u00f3n, como escribi\u00f3 en una ocasi\u00f3n el gran ge\u00f3logo Charles Lyell, es un registro\"\"<\/a> objetivo del pasado, un \u00abtestigo no intencionado\u00bb del pasado, y, si se ha excavado correctamente en un yacimiento arqueol\u00f3gico, el arque\u00f3logo recuperar\u00e1 su secuencia estratigr\u00e1fica, que es el registro\"\"<\/a> objetivo (no tocado por manos humanas) de cada yacimiento arqueol\u00f3gico, su ADN, podr\u00eda decirse.<\/p>\n

Uno hubiera pensado que para hacer una falsificaci\u00f3n plena y completa los arque\u00f3logos deber\u00edan tambi\u00e9n falsificar o fabricar igualmente el registro estratigr\u00e1fico del lugar, pero en el caso de Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, parece que hicieron un trabajo muy bueno de recuperar ese registro objetivo, esa secuencia estratigr\u00e1fica objetiva, contra la cual todos los an\u00e1lisis posteriores del sitio y de los restos que contiene deben realizarse.<\/p>\n

Puesto que Gil y Filloy han recuperado las secuencias estratigr\u00e1ficas de sus diversas zanjas en Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, de ello se sigue que, si afirman que las \u00abfalsificaciones\u00bb fueron encontradas en tales y tales posiciones en las secuencias, los objetos son \u00abverdaderos\u00bb, aut\u00e9nticos y datables en relaci\u00f3n a la secuencia estratigr\u00e1fica y otros objetos y evidencias f\u00edsicas encontradas en el lugar. Sugerir otra cosa, considerando los aproximadamente 400 objetos con grafitos encontrados, ser\u00eda sugerir un fraude que habr\u00eda tenido que incluir a todas las personas en el lugar, desde los excavadores de nivel m\u00e1s bajo en las zanjas, hasta el personal y los conservadores en los laboratorios y oficinas, y de hecho cualquiera que hubiera descubierto o por cuyas manos hubieran pasado posteriormente estos objetos.<\/p>\n

En cuanto a la extraordinaria variedad de habilidades y conocimientos que ser\u00edan necesarios para producir las 400 \u00abfalsificaciones\u00bb tal como se comentan, los arque\u00f3logos de Iru\u00f1a-Veleia deber\u00edan ser de los m\u00e1s destacados genios en la arqueolog\u00eda moderna y deber\u00edan darles las mejores c\u00e1tedras universitarias en su tierra, en vez de ser expulsados de la profesi\u00f3n por aquellos cuya motivaci\u00f3n escapa a la imaginaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

JATORRIZKO BERTSIOA<\/p>\n

Edward Harris<\/em><\/strong>, Director of the National Museum of Bermuda and author of the archaeological stratigraphic method used worldwide, knows perfectly the history of the archaeological site of Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, since he personally visited it and participated in the 1st International Conference on Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, where he saw that those who support the falsehood of the findings failed to go to defend their arguments, and, additionally, he requested from Eliseo Gil the field notebooks to see whether he had performed the excavation correctly or not.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the letter he strongly asserts that in modern archaeology nothing like this has ever happened, that it is an utter disgrace to the archaeological profession, not only in the Basque Country, but also in the Europa, and that it is necessary to reinstate Eliseo Gil and the other archaeologists for the appropriate work that they have done.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

It is impossible to forge the 400 graffiti from Iru\u00f1a-Veleia<\/strong><\/p>\n

While I can make no pretence to understand all of the matters relating to the graffiti from Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, your discussion of the extraordinary inept way in which this matter was handled by the authorities is extremely well argued and is a very important statement on the disgraceful proceedings which have resulted in the libel and slandering of several very professional excavating archaeologists.<\/p>\n

One does not need to be an archaeologist to agree that these objects are authentic, for the bases for declaring them to be forgeries defies all logic and understanding of circumstances in which normal forgers operate, to say nothing of the total lack of monetary or other gain that supposedly should accrue to the archaeologists who allegedly created those 400 \u201cmasterpieces” of ancient graffiti.<\/p>\n

The matter is an utter disgrace to the archaeological profession in the Basque Country, in Spain and indeed Europe. The way must be found to reinstate Eliseo Gil Zubillaga, Idoia Filloy Nieva and any other archaeologists who have been tarred with the hideous brush of being forgers, there being no earthly reason or motivation for them to carry out such an massive fraud on the archaeological community and indeed the world at large.<\/p>\n

The defamation of the character of those individuals is without precedence in archaeology, and once would venture to state has NEVER been levelled at any EXCAVATING archaeologist in living or recorded memory, especially in the modern period, starting from the 1960s, when the stratigraphic method finally came to the fore as THE ESSENTIAL SCIENTIFIC METHOD for archaeological excavations, a process accelerated in the later 1970s with the publication of Principles of Archaeological Stratigraphy in 1979, methods Gil and Filloy adhered to in their work.<\/p>\n

The scientific fact of the matters is that stratification, as the great geologist Charle Lyell once wrote, is an unbiased record of the Past; that it is \u201cundesignedly commemorative\u201d of the Past, and if excavated correctly on an archaeological site, the archaeologist will recover its stratigraphic sequence, which is that unbiased (untouched by human hands) record of each archaeological site, its DNA, if you will.<\/p>\n

One would have thought that in order to make a full and complete forgery, the archaeologists would also have for forge or fabricate the stratigraphic record of the site as well, but in the case of Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, it appears that they did a very good job of recovering that unbiased record, that unbiased stratigraphic sequence\u2014against which ALL later analyses of the site AND ITS CONTAINED REMAINS must be tested.<\/p>\n

Since Gill and Filloy have recovered the stratigraphic sequences of their various trenches at Iru\u00f1a-Veleia, it follows that if they state the \u201cforgeries\u201d were found at such and such positions in the sequences, that the artifacts are \u201ctrue”, authentic, and datable in relation to the stratigraphic sequence and other artefacts and physical evidence found on the site. To suggest otherwise, given the 400-odd graffiti objects recovered would be to suggest a fraud that would have had to included everyone on the site, from the lowest-level diggers in the trenches, to the staff and conservators in the artefacts laboratories and offices, and indeed anyone who discovered or subsequently handled those objects in any way whatsoever.<\/p>\n

Regarding your apt suggestions about the extraordinary range of skills and knowledge that would be needed to produce the 400 \u201cforgeries\u201d, the Iru\u00f1a-Veleia archaeologists would have to be some of the most outstanding geniuses in modern archaeology and should be given the best university chairs in the land, rather than being drummed out of the profession by those whose motivation beggars the imagination.<\/p>\n
